Although summer is here I am hard at work preparing the classroom for the upcoming school year. I am excited about some changes and having my students back at West Middle. Rebecca Rieken and Loren Velasquez will be the new Assistant principals I as well as the rest of the staff are excited to have them as part of our team. The new school year will have many great new adventures for our class and I cant wait to see every one in the fall.
This week we are learning about two very special astronauts. NASA is doing an experiment with Scott Kelly and Mark Kelly to see the effects space has on the human body. We will talk about gravity and perform our own experiments to see how gravity effects the way things fall. We will also cook up some Space Stew on Wednesday.
We will be creating a journal with a new topic for each school day, the first was weather. This week we are working on the letter "T". Today the students came up with 15 words today. We are also exploring Circular stories. We have read the books "If You Give." The three we have read are.
If You Give a Dog a Donut. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. If You Give a Pig a Pancake. In math we are exploring money and counting coins. We are also exploring our teeth and how to take care of them. This week we are working hard on our Alternative Assessments. During reading we are exploring short stories and working on comprehension. The individual work we are doing with the help of our wonderful paraprofessionals all have a heart theme. We started our day graphing conversation hearts. Then we used them to help with our adding; we will also be using them as a nonstandard unit of measure. We will be exploring the letter "V". To increase our motor skills we will be creating mail boxes for Valentines.
On Friday we will have a pizza party and the students are welcome to bring treats. The winter alternative assessments are just starting. Students will be working one on one with me to complete these assessments. I have many individual activities for each student to work on according to their individual needs.
The letter F is on our minds and we are talking about feelings. We will work on writing down words that start with the letter "F" and read books about our feelings. This is all part of our discovery about ourselves. Working in math we have our Number of the day, along with another week of fractions. The students are doing great working on this topic. We still add in our counting and addition. During lunch Jace has started going to the lunchroom and helping with ordering lunches. He sits in a desk chair to eat lunch. We are so proud of these accomplishments. Broc played volleyball in P.E. and has some great arm strength. Miracle is using more language to get her needs met. We are working on having her use more complex sentences. Nathan will start working on a more complex PEC's system. We are so happy to have Zach back with us after a extended absents. Mohammed is working hard on his eye-gaze answering system. |
